Bill Lawrence EX-Light Series (c. 1988–1989)
Beginning in late 1988, the EX-Light series was introduced as a limited-edition lineup. It consisted of two Stratocaster-style models—the BC’57 and BC’62—and one Telecaster-style model, the BT’72.
All were originally priced at ¥55,000. However, in the November 1989 catalog, the model numbers were revised—the “550” at the end of each designation was changed to “51”, and the price was reduced to ¥51,000. These guitars were far less expensive than one might expect, given their specifications and build quality.
As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I believe this series was produced as a means of clearing out surplus material stock.
That doesn’t mean the guitars were subpar—quite the opposite. They represented exceptional value for the money.
Equipped with Black Label pickups and jumbo frets, the EX-Light models offer a surprisingly satisfying combination.
Weight: 3.37 kg (including strings) — not exactly “extra light,” despite the name.
