Greco — The Brand Established by Kanda Shokai
Greco is a musical instrument brand founded by Kanda Shokai, a company engaged in the wholesale distribution of guitars and related products. The brand has a long history, dating back to its establishment in 1960.
From the 1970s through the 1980s, Greco—like many other Japanese manufacturers of the time—focused primarily on producing copy models of Gibson and Fender guitars. Instruments from this era are among the most sought-after pieces in Japan’s vintage guitar market today.
One key figure behind Greco’s product development was Mr. Hidetomo Shiino, who played an important role in shaping the company’s lineup.
Greco’s success stemmed from its savvy and forward-thinking marketing: striking advertisements in music magazines, collaborations with international artists such as Mick Ralphs and members of KISS, and even the creation of custom-order models tailored to specific player demands.
By staying highly attuned to consumer trends, Greco cultivated a large and loyal fan base, ultimately growing into one of the most influential brands in the history of Japanese electric guitars.
Even today, when people speak of “Japanese vintage guitars,” it’s fair to say that Greco remains the name most beloved by enthusiasts.
Initially, production was contracted to Fuji Gen Gakki (now known as Fujigen), but was later shifted to Dyna Gakki.
